- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/4 cup water
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Wash the apples thoroughly under cold water.
- Peel the apples using a vegetable peeler, core them, and slice into thin wedges (about 1/4-inch thick).
- Drizzle with lemon juice in a large bowl to prevent browning.
- In a separate bowl, combine granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Stir well to evenly distribute the spices.
- In a large skillet, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat.
- Add the apple slices to the skillet, spreading them out evenly.
- Sprinkle the sugar and spice mixture over the apples and gently toss to coat.
- Pour in the water to create a syrup as the apples cook.
- Cover the skillet with a lid and cook for 5-7 minutes until the apples soften and release their juices.
- Remove the lid, stir gently, and continue cooking uncovered for another 5-10 minutes until tender and caramelized.
- Once the apples are tender and the syrup has thickened, remove from heat.
- Taste and adjust sweetness if desired.
- Let sit for a few minutes to meld flavors.
- Serve warm as a side dish or dessert, paired with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
- They also make a delicious topping for pancakes or waffles, or serve alongside fried chicken or biscuits for a traditional Southern meal.
