Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large Granny Smith apples (or your favorite tart apples)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup water
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Wash the apples thoroughly under cold water.
  2. Peel the apples using a vegetable peeler, core them, and slice into thin wedges (about 1/4-inch thick).
  3. Drizzle with lemon juice in a large bowl to prevent browning.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Stir well to evenly distribute the spices.
  5. In a large skillet, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat.
  6. Add the apple slices to the skillet, spreading them out evenly.
  7. Sprinkle the sugar and spice mixture over the apples and gently toss to coat.
  8. Pour in the water to create a syrup as the apples cook.
  9. Cover the skillet with a lid and cook for 5-7 minutes until the apples soften and release their juices.
  10. Remove the lid, stir gently, and continue cooking uncovered for another 5-10 minutes until tender and caramelized.
  11. Once the apples are tender and the syrup has thickened, remove from heat.
  12. Taste and adjust sweetness if desired.
  13. Let sit for a few minutes to meld flavors.
  14. Serve warm as a side dish or dessert, paired with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
  15. They also make a delicious topping for pancakes or waffles, or serve alongside fried chicken or biscuits for a traditional Southern meal.
