Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk, room temperature
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 12 tablespoons heavy cream (optional, for consistency)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a cupcake pan with paper liners.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and cocoa powder.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, red food coloring, vanilla extract, and white vinegar until well combined.
  4. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
  5. Fill each cupcake liner about two-thirds full with the batter.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes. Check for doneness with a toothpick.
  7. Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and unsalted butter together until smooth and creamy.
  9. Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing on low speed until combined, then beat on medium speed until fluffy.
  10. Add the vanilla extract and mix until incorporated. Adjust consistency with heavy cream if needed.
  11. Once the cupcakes are completely cool, frost them using a piping bag or a knife.
  12. Optionally, sprinkle red velvet crumbs on top for decoration or add chocolate shavings or ganache for an extra touch.
  13. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Allow to come to room temperature before serving for the best flavor.

Notes

  • Ensure all ingredients are at room temperature for the best results.
  • For a richer flavor, consider adding a pinch of cinnamon to the batter.
