  • Author: Dottie
  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 4-6 glasses 1x

Description

This refreshing homemade grapefruit soda combines tangy grapefruit juice with sweet syrup for a bubbly, invigorating drink. Garnished with mint and lime, it’s the perfect thirst-quencher for any occasion!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large grapefruits
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 liter of sparkling water or club soda
  • Ice cubes
  • Fresh mint leaves (for garnish)
  • Optional: lime slices for garnish

Instructions

  1. Wash the grapefruits under cool running water to remove any dirt or wax.
  2. Cut each grapefruit in half horizontally.
  3. Using a citrus juicer, extract the juice from each half, catching any seeds.
  4. Strain the juice through a fine mesh sieve into a measuring cup or bowl to remove pulp.
  5. Measure out 1 cup of the freshly squeezed grapefruit juice and set aside.
  6. In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of water. Stir gently to mix.
  7. Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring to a gentle simmer, stirring until the sugar dissolves (about 3-5 minutes).
  8. Remove from heat and let cool for a few minutes.
  9. Add the 1 cup of grapefruit juice to the syrup and stir well to combine. Store in the refrigerator if making ahead.
  10. In a large pitcher, combine the grapefruit syrup with 1 liter of sparkling water or club soda, pouring the syrup in first.
  11. Gently stir to combine, being careful not to lose bubbles.
  12. Taste and adjust sweetness with more syrup or grapefruit juice as desired.
  13. Fill tall glasses with ice cubes.
  14. Pour the grapefruit soda over the ice, filling each glass about three-quarters full.
  15. Garnish with fresh mint leaves and a slice of lime on the rim.
  16. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes

  • For a unique flavor, consider infusing the syrup with herbs like rosemary or basil.
  • You can mix in other citrus juices for a more complex flavor.
  • For an adult version, add a splash of gin or vodka to each glass.
