Ingredients
Scale
- 2 large grapefruits
- 1 cup of sugar
- 1 cup of water
- 1 liter of sparkling water or club soda
- Ice cubes
- Fresh mint leaves (for garnish)
- Optional: lime slices for garnish
Instructions
- Wash the grapefruits under cool running water to remove any dirt or wax.
- Cut each grapefruit in half horizontally.
- Using a citrus juicer, extract the juice from each half, catching any seeds.
- Strain the juice through a fine mesh sieve into a measuring cup or bowl to remove pulp.
- Measure out 1 cup of the freshly squeezed grapefruit juice and set aside.
- In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of water. Stir gently to mix.
- Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring to a gentle simmer, stirring until the sugar dissolves (about 3-5 minutes).
- Remove from heat and let cool for a few minutes.
- Add the 1 cup of grapefruit juice to the syrup and stir well to combine. Store in the refrigerator if making ahead.
- In a large pitcher, combine the grapefruit syrup with 1 liter of sparkling water or club soda, pouring the syrup in first.
- Gently stir to combine, being careful not to lose bubbles.
- Taste and adjust sweetness with more syrup or grapefruit juice as desired.
- Fill tall glasses with ice cubes.
- Pour the grapefruit soda over the ice, filling each glass about three-quarters full.
- Garnish with fresh mint leaves and a slice of lime on the rim.
- Serve immediately and enjoy!
Notes
- For a unique flavor, consider infusing the syrup with herbs like rosemary or basil.
- You can mix in other citrus juices for a more complex flavor.
- For an adult version, add a splash of gin or vodka to each glass.
