Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 8 small corn or flour tortillas
  • 1 cup shredded cabbage (green or purple)
  • 1 avocado, sliced
  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1 lime, cut into wedges
  • Hot sauce, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the shrimp under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, cornmeal, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs and buttermilk until well combined.
  4. Dip each shrimp into the buttermilk mixture, allowing excess to drip off, then dredge in the flour-cornmeal mixture. Place the coated shrimp on a plate and set aside.
  5. In a large skillet or deep frying pan, pour enough vegetable oil to cover the bottom by about 1/2 inch. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
  6. Carefully add the shrimp to the hot oil in batches, frying for about 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove the shrimp and transfer to a plate lined with paper towels.
  7. Repeat the frying process with the remaining shrimp, adjusting the heat as necessary.
  8. While the shrimp are frying, warm the tortillas in a dry skillet over medium heat for about 30 seconds on each side or wrap in foil and place in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes.
  9. Assemble the tacos by placing a generous amount of shredded cabbage on each tortilla.
  10. Add a few pieces of crispy shrimp on top of the cabbage.
  11. Top with slices of avocado and a sprinkle of fresh cilantro.
  12. Squeeze a wedge of lime over each taco and drizzle with hot sauce if desired.
  13. Arrange the assembled tacos on a serving platter with extra lime wedges and hot sauce on the side.
  14. Enjoy these delicious crispy shrimp tacos with friends or family for a fun taco night!

Notes

  • For an extra layer of flavor, consider marinating the shrimp in lime juice, garlic, and spices for about 30 minutes before coating them.
