Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1–2 tablespoons heavy cream or milk (adjust for desired consistency)
- Pinch of salt (optional, to taste)
Instructions
- Soften the Butter: Ensure your unsalted butter is at room temperature. If needed, cut it into small cubes and let it sit for 15-20 minutes or microwave for about 10 seconds at a time until softened but not melted.
- Beat the Butter: In a large mixing bowl, add the softened butter. Using an electric mixer, beat on medium speed for 2-3 minutes until light and fluffy.
- Add the Powdered Sugar: Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing on low speed to prevent a sugar cloud. Once all sugar is added, increase speed to medium and beat for another 2-3 minutes until thick and creamy.
- Incorporate Vanilla and Cinnamon: Add vanilla extract and ground cinnamon. Beat on medium speed for another minute until well combined.
- Adjust Consistency: If frosting is too thick, add heavy cream or milk one tablespoon at a time until desired consistency is reached. If too thin, add more powdered sugar.
- Taste and Adjust: Taste the frosting and adjust sweetness or cinnamon as desired. Add a pinch of salt if you want to balance the sweetness.
- Prepare Your Cake or Cupcakes: Ensure your cake or cupcakes are completely cooled before frosting.
- Frosting Tools: Use an offset spatula for cakes or a piping bag for cupcakes. Fill the piping bag and twist the top to prevent spilling.
- Frosting a Cake: For layered cakes, spread frosting on the first layer, stack the second layer, and apply a thin crumb coat. Chill for 30 minutes to set.
- Final Frosting Layer: After chilling, apply a thicker layer of frosting and smooth it out or create swirls as desired.
- Frosting Cupcakes: Pipe a swirl of frosting on top of each cupcake, starting from the outside and working inward. Optionally, sprinkle with cinnamon or crushed nuts.
- Storing the Frosting: Store leftover frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. Re-whip before using.
- Freezing the Frosting: Freeze frosting in a freezer-safe container for up to three months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight and re-whip before use.
