Description
A refreshing Blackberry Hibiscus Tea Frappe, perfect for a hot day! This blended drink combines tart hibiscus, sweet blackberries, and a touch of honey for a delightful treat.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups water
- 1 cup dried hibiscus flowers
- 2 cups fresh or frozen blackberries
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 2 cups ice cubes
- 1 cup Blackberry Hibiscus Tea Concentrate (cooled)
- 1/2 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy, your preference!)
- 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup (adjust to taste)
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, pour in the 4 cups of water and add the 1 cup of dried hibiscus flowers. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
- Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, add the 2 cups of blackberries (fresh or frozen work great!), and the 1/2 cup of granulated sugar. Stir well to dissolve the sugar.
- Let the mixture simmer gently for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally. The liquid should turn a deep red color.
- Remove from heat. Place a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth-lined colander over a heat-safe bowl. Carefully pour the mixture through the sieve to strain out the solids.
- Stir in the 1 tablespoon of lemon juice.
- Allow the concentrate to cool completely to room temperature. Then, transfer it to an airtight container and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight.
- In a high-powered blender, combine the 2 cups of ice cubes, 1 cup of the chilled Blackberry Hibiscus Tea Concentrate, 1/2 cup of milk, 2 tablespoons of honey or maple syrup, and 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
- Blend on high speed until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy. Stop and scrape down the sides as needed. If the frappe is too thick, add a splash more milk. If it’s too thin, add a few more ice cubes.
- Give the frappe a taste and adjust the sweetness or tartness as needed.
- Pour the frappe into one or two glasses.
- Top with a dollop of whipped cream.
- Garnish with a few fresh blackberries and a sprig of mint.
- Serve immediately and enjoy!
Notes
- Add a Boost of Caffeine: For an extra kick, add a shot of espresso or a tablespoon of instant coffee to the blender.
- Make it Vegan: Use plant-based milk, maple syrup, and vegan whipped cream.
- Spice it Up: Add a pinch of ground ginger or cinnamon to the blender for a warm, spicy flavor.
- Berry Blast: Experiment with different berries! Raspberries, blueberries, or strawberries would all be delicious additions.
- Adjust Sweetness: The amount of sugar in the concentrate and honey/maple syrup in the frappe can be adjusted to your liking. Start with the recommended amounts and then add more to taste.
- Make it Ahead: You can prepare the Blackberry Hibiscus Tea Concentrate several days in advance and store it in the refrigerator. This makes it easy to whip up a frappe whenever you’re in the mood.
- For a Thicker Frappe: Freeze the Blackberry Hibiscus Tea Concentrate in ice cube trays and use those instead of regular ice cubes. This will result in a thicker, more intensely flavored frappe.
- Frappe is Too Thin: Add more ice cubes and blend again.
- Frappe is Too Thick: Add a splash more milk and blend again.
- Not Sweet Enough: Add more honey or maple syrup and blend again.
- Too Tart: Add a little more sugar or honey to balance the acidity.
- Blender Not Blending Properly: Make sure your blender is powerful enough to crush ice. If not, you may need to use a smaller amount of ice or let the ice soften slightly before blending.
