Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed
- 6 slices of bacon, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
- 1/4 cup slivered almonds (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Wash the green beans thoroughly under cold running water to remove any dirt or debris.
- Trim the ends of the green beans by snapping them off or using a knife. Discard the ends.
- Place the trimmed green beans in a large pot of salted water and bring to a boil over high heat.
- Once boiling, add the green beans and blanch for about 3-4 minutes to maintain their color and crisp texture.
- Transfer the blanched green beans to a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process. Let sit for about 5 minutes, then drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat for about 1 minute.
- Add the chopped bacon and cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until crispy and golden brown.
- Use a slotted spoon to remove the bacon and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess grease, leaving the drippings in the skillet.
- In the same skillet, add the diced onion and sauté over medium heat for about 3-4 minutes until translucent and soft.
- Add the minced garlic and sauté for an additional 1-2 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent burning.
- If using, add red pepper flakes and stir to combine.
- Add the blanched green beans to the skillet and stir well to combine.
- Season with salt and black pepper, stirring to ensure even coating.
- Cook the green beans for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally to absorb flavors.
- Drizzle balsamic vinegar over the mixture, stir well, and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes to reduce slightly.
- Remove the skillet from heat once the green beans reach your desired tenderness.
- Return the crispy bacon to the skillet and stir to combine.
- If desired, sprinkle slivered almonds on top for added crunch.
- Transfer to a serving dish and garnish with additional black pepper or balsamic vinegar if desired.
