Ingredients
Scale
- 4 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional)
- 1/4 cup water (or apple juice)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions
- Start by washing the apples thoroughly under cold water to remove any dirt or wax.
- Peel the apples using a vegetable peeler.
- Core the apples using an apple corer or a knife, removing all seeds and tough core.
- Slice the apples into thin wedges or small cubes, aiming for about 1/4-inch thick slices.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples with the granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and lemon juice.
- Toss the apples gently to coat them evenly with the sugar and spices.
- If you prefer a thicker filling, sprinkle the cornstarch over the apple mixture and toss again until well combined.
- Add the water (or apple juice) to the mixture to create a syrup as the apples cook down. Add vanilla extract if desired.
- In a large skillet or saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat.
- Once the butter is melted and bubbling, add the apple mixture to the pan, spreading it out evenly.
- Cook the apples for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they soften but still hold their shape.
- Check the apples for doneness after 10 minutes; they should be tender but not mushy. Cook longer if desired.
- Once cooked to your liking, remove the pan from heat and let the filling cool for a few minutes.
- Use the apple filling for pies, tarts, or as a topping for pancakes or waffles.
- For a pie, roll out your pie crust, place it in a pie dish, and pour the apple filling in evenly.
- For a crumble or crisp, layer the apple filling in a baking dish and top with your favorite crumble topping.
- Serve warm over vanilla ice cream or yogurt for a delightful treat!
Notes
- Experiment with different spices like allspice or ginger for a unique twist.
- For a caramelized flavor, substitute brown sugar for granulated sugar.
- Add chopped nuts for texture or a splash of bourbon or rum for a complex flavor.
