Ingredients
Scale
- 2 pounds pork shoulder or pork belly, cut into 1-inch thick strips
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
- 1/4 cup honey
- 2 tablespoons Chinese rice wine (or dry sherry)
- 1 tablespoon five-spice powder
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- 1 tablespoon minced ginger
- 1 teaspoon red food coloring (optional, for color)
- Sesame seeds, for garnish
- Chopped green onions, for garnish
Instructions
- In a medium-sized bowl, combine the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey, and Chinese rice wine. Whisk them together until well blended.
- Add the five-spice powder, minced garlic, minced ginger, and red food coloring (if using) to the bowl. Mix everything until the marinade is smooth and all the ingredients are well incorporated.
- Place the pork strips in a large resealable plastic bag or a shallow dish.
- Pour the marinade over the pork, ensuring that each piece is well coated. If using a bag, seal it tightly and massage the marinade into the pork. If using a dish, cover it with plastic wrap.
- Refrigerate the marinated pork for at least 4 hours, but ideally overnight.
- Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C). This usually takes about 5 minutes.
- Once preheated, lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Remove the pork from the marinade, allowing any excess marinade to drip off. Discard the leftover marinade.
- Place the pork strips in a single layer in the air fryer basket, ensuring they are not overcrowded.
- Cook the pork for 15 minutes, flipping the strips halfway through the cooking time.
- Check the internal temperature of the pork; it should reach at least 145°F (63°C). If not, continue cooking in 2-minute increments until done.
- Once cooked, remove the pork from the air fryer and let it rest for about 5 minutes.
- While the pork is resting, prepare a quick glaze using the leftover marinade. In a small saucepan, bring the marinade to a boil over medium heat.
- Once boiling, reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 5-7 minutes, or until it thickens slightly.
- After the glaze has thickened, remove it from the heat and brush it over the rested pork strips.
- Slice the pork into bite-sized pieces or serve the strips whole.
- Arrange the pork on a serving platter and drizzle any remaining glaze over the top.
- Garnish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions.
Notes
- For best results, marinate the pork overnight to enhance the flavor.
- Adjust the cooking time based on the thickness of the pork strips and the air fryer model.
- Serve with steamed rice or in a bao bun for a complete meal.
